Harvey Butchart was an American geologist, adventurer, and hiker, known for his numerous exploratory journeys to the Grand Canyon. He is often referred to as the "Grand Canyon's Greatest Explorer" due to his extensive knowledge and experience of the area.
Butchart was born in 1907 in New York and received his degree in geology from Harvard University. He worked for the United States Geological Survey and taught at several universities, including Northern Arizona University.
Butchart's love for hiking began in the 1940s, and he started exploring the Grand Canyon in 1946. He would go on to complete over 12,000 miles of hiking in the canyon, discovering numerous new routes and areas that were previously unexplored.
Despite the physical challenges of hiking in the Grand Canyon, Butchart continued to explore well into his 80s, clocking over 1,000 trips to the area. He passed away in 2002 at the age of 94, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most iconic figures in Grand Canyon hiking history.
